He was using Simplified Japanese Kanji, and doesn't want to be bothered looking for the "Traditional" character set that would have more strokes.

It's interesting how the Kanji translates just about the same in Japanese and Chinese when you do with via computer though ;-) BTW, I have the Kanji character set installed on my computer for my hobby of collecting Japanese swords. It it helpful in translating the dates and meis inscribed on the nakagos of the blades.
