Don't laugh. I a theater I work at no-and-then did almost exactly that.
They had hideously uncomfortable seating when they opened, and a very
visible promotion for the "new seating" fund. When they had enough
collected they replaced about 1/3 of the seating with the new style, and my
understanding is that the donation rate increased after that (the new
seating was much more comfortable).

My community group did this too. The folding chairs the church has are
not padded. So over the past two years or so, we've asked people to
donate 10 bucks for a chair, and they have an option to add a
dedication plate. The chairs will belong to the church, but it was our
initiative. We did a similar thing to help the church get central air
in the theater space. In that case, we held a raffle during each
performance.
