The smoke idea seems interesting. I think I'll try it, by also using a
fan (or something) to blow the smoke in order to have an exhaust that
apparently holds it's shape (I don't want to see rising smoke, no ?).
I won't approach calcium carbide, that's far more uncontrollable than
propane.
Common safety sense dictates to check the barrel for obstructions
before firing the combustion based effect, of course. And I don't think
the propane version can really be considered a potato gun, as the
"barrel" isn't closed at the back end (well, I need a fair ammount of
air entering alongside propane for the effect to be achieved).
Oh, for those wondering "why the hell isn't he just getting the SFX
pyrotechnician to place a squib or two ?": I want to be able to repeat
firing. Think machinegun. Or gatling.
