I never bothered with the spear in my production and we simply had
Jesus grasp bolts between his fingers (as someone else has suggested).
I brought the cross on during the Prologue/overture so it was on stage
throughout - sort of an omen of things to come ...
The whip was another story! An engineer in the cast rigged up a whip
handle with a floating piston inside it which gradually pushed stage
blood down a capiliary tube in the soft cotton rope we used for the
whip proper. This resulted with the first 6 or 7 blows leaving no mark
at all while the tube was primed but from there on more and more blood
became apparent.
