Archimedes is supposed to have built huge focussing mirrors in 212 in Syracuse - large enough to set fire to and sink Roman ships. Probably not actually built but suggests that the principle was known.

I recently read that some researchers, in some way associated with the Mythbuster guys, tried to re-create Archimedes "death ray". They focused it on an old fishing boat. At 45 metres (150ft) they got some smoke. At half that distance they got a small fire that fizzled out.
Search Google News for Archimedes for several links. I looked at the article from The Guardian of 10.24.05.
