Staging the crucifixion

Hi,
I'm directing Jesus Christ Superstar for a local musical society, and
I'm looking for ideas on how to stage the crucifixion. I want it to be
as realistic as possible without actually having to crucify the actor
(that could get kinda difficult as we'd run out of understudies fairly
quickly).
I want it to look like the actor is held up by nails, not by
ropes...but how to do that? I have a few ideas, but am unsure how well
they'll work, so I'm eager for any suggestions.
Also, I want to have him pierced by a spear...do realistic-looking
'fake' spears exist, which can give a convincing illusion of stabbing
him in the side, followed by a gush of blood?
Any ideas are more than welcome. Thanks for your help.
