Andy

I don't doubt that your hire prices are fair; however I resent the way that
you manufactured erroneous and misleading comparitive prices to try to
persuade me that hiring top quality equipment would be cheaper than buying
budget quality kit.

I did indeed ask for advice but my questions were specific and directed at
finding out whether this equipment will actually be most suitable in the
circumstances in which WE intend to use it. I have made it clear that I
wouldn't consider using Teatro lanterns in other, more demanding, venues and
indeed bought a batch of CCT lanterns for a more active company in a larger,
better equipped village hall. In a theatre environment with more hanging
space I should probably consider Strand or ETC lanterns. I am quite capable
of making up my own mind about the relative merits of buying and hiring
which have as much to do with practicalities and convenience as straight
economics.

Apart from this I did say that I had been asked to specify and source budget
lighting and sound systems for this venue. The decision to own their own
kit has already been made by the company and my brief is simply to advise
how they can maximize the value of their limited budget. They have been
fortunate so far in that I have been willing to spend time sourcing and
carying in equipment from other companies with which I am involved as well
as designing, rigging and operating LX and sound for their productions
(which can sometimes be awkward - as for example last week where the sound
rig was suddenly required by its owner for a gig and wasn't available until
the afternoon of the first performance). The company has no technical
expertise of its own and they are aware that when I am not available other
folks are likely only to be prepared to work with what equipment they are
given and not chase around finding the kit before they can start, which is
why they want the security of their own basic equipment.

What I was hoping to get from this forum was some objective advice about the
performance of this cheaper equipment and I'm afraid that you have given me
absolutely no help in this area. Simply telling me that euipment is cheap
and therefore must be crap is of no objective value whatsoever. Duncan was
a bit more help since he said that he had used some Teatro products and had
personally found them to be crap but even that isn't a deal of help, since
what may be crap in one environment and to one person could well be
perfectly acceptable in another, and it is still a subjective comment based
on whether or not he liked the lanterns. The comparison is also between
brand new cheapo stuff with a limited life expectancy and better quality kit
that has reached the end of its reliable hiring life and NOT between new
lanterns of both types - the company still has the same amount of money
irrespective of how they spend it! What I was hoping was for some comments
from users about what is good and what is bad about these budget products
and why - hopefully in comparison with some other more commonly used product
like a Minim or a Minuette. Surely that wasn't too much to hope for given
the enormous breadth of experience amongst the members of this group!

Cheers

David
