It's a very interesting question.
Let's start with the ironmongery. Stage lanterns have an indefinite
life. We hve some that are 40 years old (Strand Patt 23 and 123), and
stil in use. Other more modern ones have decayed more rapidly, and the
effort of repairing them was not really worth it. But provided that you
keep the reflectors and lenses clean they are seldom a problem. The
Prelude range with which we replaced them have a problem with the GX
9.5 lampholders, which die quite frequently, and are a devil or a large
expense to replace.
Thing like tab tracks and bars go on for ever, although if they are
often struck and re-rigged the hoist attachments need checked and
replaces as needed. These are one-offs.
Turning to the electronics, this does have a finite life. As it gets
more complex, so it becomes harder to repair. Faders will wear,
capacitors will blow, and even semiconductors may get tired. Also,
techniques will improve. Neither you nor I can guess what will be
around in ten years.
For budgeting purposes, all I can really suggest is that a ten-year
rolling replacement programme is probably right. Some gear may live
longer, some less long. This is what we run. Little will last less
long, with due care. And, of course, you don't have to dispose of it if
it still works adequately.
