Re: Strand 520 and Moving Lights

Peter

I'm not sure that there is such a thing as an idiot's guide, but this
might help you:

To patch a fixture it must be in the console's fixture library. If it
isn't then you will probably find the appropriate library entries on
the Strand Web site which can be downloaded and (following Strand's
instructions) uploaded into the 520. (Old hands would probably just
create their own, but thats another matter). Really the chief at the
venue should organise this for you.

Then you have to decide what dmx start address to set the units to -
this can be anything so long as it doesn't clash with anything else on
the system (and they don't clash with each other!) - again you really
need to consult with the chief at the venue about this.

Having done that you can pick any two unused channel numbers on the
desk to be your two movers. You patch them through the patch screen
using the syntax in the manual and the dmx start addresses you've set
them to. The 520 uses the fixture library entry to sort out what is
what for you beyond that and you don't really need to worry about it.

Once you've done that (and turned tracker on in the board setup if it
isn't already) all should happen.

To use them you just select the channel numbers you've patched them to
in the normal way. The display will change automatically to the tracker
display which will show you what all the various attributes are set to.

Again, really, helping you set up and use the board is normally part of
the venue chief's duties so I'd certainly get him/her to help you with
this. It's not actually as hard as it might seem just reading the
manual.

The harder bit is deciding what you want to do with them once they are
patched and, if anything complex is involved, programming the board to
actually make them do what you want. Since the possibilities are almost
endless it's a little difficult to give any kind of "idiot's guide"
type help on that.
