I had envisioned something in the neighborhood of blinding light with discernable 5 point shape.
Are you sure you want to actually blind the audience? The effect could actually be more annoying than "dazzling". Imagine an inky pointing right at you while you're trying to watch a show.
Sometimes the better effects are much more subtle, and which is more effective will depend on what else is happening (stage wise, music wise, sound effects wise, background illumination wise, three men wise...)
Also, the actual "star of Bethlehem" is thought to be simply the conjunction of (I believe) three planets, this being significant to the Arab kings who were also learned astronomers. While this factoid may be insignificant in the context of theater, especially an "over the top" production, you may be able to work it in and lend deeper meaning to the scene.
