Szot is indeed terrific, but I actually liked his alternate, David
Pittsinger, even better. He's a bit more mature and has a bit more
bass-baritone heft to his singing. The production as a whole is
wonderful - brilliantly directed.

Unfortunately, I missed his stint in the role, but this concurs with
several reviews circulating at the time.

I first heard Pittsinger years ago, not in MT, but as The Friar, in a
performance of 'Don Carlo' at the Met.  I and other attendees nearby
felt he should have been singing Fillippo II, not that Samuel Ramey
was the proverbial 'Chopped Liver', either.

Well, there you go again, LT. Your spurious claim of having attended
the Metropolitan Opera (ever) isn't going to play any better here than
