I never saw the show, but I've seen more then enough negative statements
about Jerry's time in the role and yet the reviewers loved him. Which
means nothing to me as I'm not a fan of the current 007 or Batman either.
Anyway I didn't think Hayes was all that great as Lewis, much as Jerry
did. Overall I don't think Hayes is all that great period.
Call me unsophisticated, but I liked Jerry Lewis as Applegate. It's
not a huge stretch of the imagination to picture hell as being rules
by Jerry, and whatever else you can say about him, he was FUNNY. Yes,
his 10 minutes of standup in the middle of "The Good Old Days" may
have been out of place, but he had the audience in stitches and Damn
Yankees is the kind of show that can support that kind of star turn.
It ain't Fiddler.
