Tim, I'm bothered when composers misaccent words. It's one of the
reasons I prefer musical comedies to English-language operas. I
greatly admire The Most Happy Fella - don't think there's a single
false accent there, and Porgy and Bess. So, it can be done. Opera
composers, often, have more pressing concerns.
It'll be interesting to see what Stephen Schwartz does with his opera
commission. (Then again, he seems to think "cohorts" is accented on
the second syllable.)
The program praises Pacific Overtures as being a similar piece, and I
couldn't help but imagine a Sondheim musical about Nixon!
