Eavesdropping Effort Began Soon After Sept. 11 Attacks By ERIC LICHTBLAU and JAMES RISEN http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/18/politics/18spy.html 3rd paragraph
The agency operation included eavesdropping on communications between Americans and other individuals in the United States and people in Afghanistan without the court-approved search warrants that are normally required for such domestic intelligence activities. --
Um, I think you are misunderstanding the above quote. "The agency operation included eavesdropping on communications between Americans and other individuals in the United States" --thus there were two types of folks making the calls from America, AMERICANS and OTHER INDIVIDUALS IN THE U.S, meaning non-Americans who live in the United States NOT meaning that the communications were taking place between "Americans and other individuals in the U.S". Do you see what I mean? THe eavesdropping took place between Americans and non-Americans (both in America) who were communicating with folks in Afghanistan. Thus these calls were indeed Foreign. Hope I cleared that up.
And just how do you know this so specifically? Unless you are privy to more records than most congresspeople are, you have *no* idea whose phones were tapped or conversations monitored. You're just taking the word of Shrub and other officials who have repeatedly and consistently lied about the war, torture, detention camps, etc.
Since you're so comfortable with the president allowing unmonitored spying, I trust that when Hillary or some other Democrat wins the presidency in 2008, you won't let out a peep when she or he authorizes *any* kind of spying "to fight the war on terror."
No I won't. However, when Hillary starts sneaking around with 900 FBI files in an attempt to dig up dirt on her political opponents, I WILL let out a peep, although the NY TIMES and other members of the left wing media will not. And when Hillary starts using the IRS to attack and intimidate her political opponents, once again I will let out a peep.
You won't *know* if she's "sneaking around" because there will be no one checking up. And there will be *no* one distinguishing between "political opponents" and "terrorists." Satan -- er, Cheney -- is constantly saying that anyone who reports anything unfavorable to the administration is "helping the enemy," so how do we know that Shrub hasn't been spying on political enemies? As proof of how the government abuses spying, look at the snake J.Edgar Hoover, who illegally eavesdropped and compiled dossiers on people he called "communists" who were nothing more than political enemies.
I make a distinction between the government eavesdropping on the conversations of EVIL people who are trying to do harm to Americans, and an administration using stolen FBI files and the IRS to to silence its' critics. Do YOU? BTW Where stands the NY Times when it comes to the release of the Barrett Report? Why aren't they leaking out that info or calling that it be released to the press via the FOIA? The Barrett Report has nothing to do with our NATIONAL SECURITY, it just might prove a bit embarassing to the Clintons and could bring HIllary's presidential bid to a screeching stop!
I have no idea what the NYTimes position is. I don't pay much attention to it since it became a conservative mouthpiece.
