Presumably, the same principle espoused last night by Bill O'Reilly on
Fox News (it's part of my mother's Sky package; I watched out of
curiosity and was totally appalled): America got hit by terrorists,
America is #1, America therefore has the right to avenge itself in
whatever way it chooses even if it means fucking international law in
the process, and the American "far left" (as if there's any organised
movement resembling a "far left" in the USA these days) who complain
will eventually be brought to account. O'Reilly's burblings were
inspired by the growing rendition scandal; his (insane) point of view
was that the USA - with Britain's help (!) - saved the whole of Europe
from Hitler, and saved it again from Communism, and should therefore be
allowed to imprison people in contravention of international law
wherever it chooses. Mr. O'Reilly is also, it seems, somehow under the
impression that the USA is the only nation ever to have suffered a
terrorist attack.
