Perhaps you're thinking of William Goldman's chapter about that play in
THE SEASON? (For which his hook is "Homosexuals in the theater.")
I'm not sure I buy it about either author, though. First of all, as
noted by Victor, messed-up characters are the stuff of drama. Plus,
when I think of Laurents's women, I see a great variety of people. Sad
but gallant Leona, Rose in GYPSY, the self-examining Virginia in A
CLEARING IN THE WOODS, the two old friends who each sometimes envy the
other in THE TURNING POINT, uncompromising but magnetic Katie in THE
WAY WE WERE -- there's quite a range there, and I wouldn't say that
they represent a simple dislikable / nutty choice.
