Magic Slays Ilona Andrews Kate Daniels-5 8
This is set a couple of months after the end of the last book. Kate spends
most the book physically restricted because of the injuries she had at the
end of that book. Just when it looked like the over-arcing story was
finally going to be addressed (that is, the conflict between Kate and her
fater), we are introduced to a new villain, a group of non-magical humans
who are out to destroy all the magical and magic-using folk. This enemy
appears to be a done-in-one, but we get some (but not complete) resolution
on Andrea's story thread. We also get some movement forward with Kate's
adopted daughter.
I was a little disappointed that we didn't get the book I posited from
the teaser chapter in the last one -- the one where The People are losing
control of vampires, and Kate has to get deeply involved with them. As
it is, things go off on a completely different tangent after the first chapter.
I also thought they could have used the mcguffin device for its intended
purpose before destroying it. Seems like such a zone, carefully located,
It would have killed a lot of people who were trying to stop it.
would be useful. Also thought it was a bit odd that Atlanta has a large
Russian mage community..
It was nice to see Curran frustrated and willing to chuck it all: "I do
everything for them, and the first time I'm wounded they spend all their
time trying to kill my mate". 4/5
I liked that, too. I also liked the Jennifer handling.
