Well, I am certainly not feeling gloomy and despairing. _Grand Central Arena_ earned out in its first six months (well, six months and about a week or two -- it was $50 short of earning out as of the end of December), and _Threshold_ is close to earning out in hardcover. The spike from the release of its sequel caused _Boundary_ to sell something like 4,000 more copies, too. GCA was also picked up by Hayakawa for translation into Japanese.
An interesting point about GCA was that it was, in fact, physically IMPOSSIBLE for it to have earned out based on book sales alone. Electronic sales of GCA accounted for more than 25% of its sales.
So from my limited view there shouldn't be gloom and despair.
