My mother's first name is Peggie. It was only with the greatest
difficulty that I convinced my fiancee of this when she was ordering
wedding invitations; she was *certain* that that was just a nickname
for 'Margaret' (something I'd never known), and was quite insistent
that we use the proper name.

Similar to my brother whose full given name is simply "Ben", as I mentioned
elsethread.

My father's name is Don. One of his sisters was named Betty.

No Donald, no Elizabeth. Don and Betty.

Their siblings were Urban, William, Dorothy, Robert and Joel, and all
used nicknames, but Don and Betty didn't need 'em.

My mother's mother's name was Hattie. Not Harriet, Hattie. She
had a sister named Callie -- I'm not sure what that might've been
short for if it had been short for anything, which it wasn't.

Well, the screenwriter Callie Khouri's name is Carolyn, the actress
Callie Thorne's name is Calliope, the GREY'S ANATOMY character Callie
Torres is Calliope, and there's Calipurnia and other names.

My mother's eldest sister was named Dorothy, no nickname;

My grandmother was Dorothy, her eldest daughter was Dorothy and one of
her daughters-in-law was Dorothy, but they were known as Dottie, Bee
and Flicka.

Their other sister was named
Flossie. Not Florence: Flossie. I don't get it.

What's not to get? Her name was Flossie, like my aunt Betty's name was
Betty or your grandmother's name was Hattie.

What I don't get is why people would give their children
nicknames instead of names.

But then, I lived for three years in the San Joaquin Valley,
where people not infrequently gave their children initials
instead of names. I knew a J.R. and an M.Z.
