I read these when I was in elementary school, which was the early
70s. They seemed old then, but in retrospect there was an
undercurrent of Cold War atomic fears that probably puts them in the
50s rather than the 40s.
There?s a set of books I?d really like to find again, although I doubt
they?d be as good as I remember them:
They were space opera stuff, with rocketships going all over the solar
system. Each book dealt with a different planet. At least two of
them included the characters finding out that some alien race had
blown themselves up - that was where both the asteroid belt and
Saturn?s rings came from. I think the one with the asteroid belt also
included a search for magnetic monopoles.
_The Secret of Saturn's Rings_, et al, by Donald A. Wollheim? There
were a bunch of these with _Secret_ titles, and I don't remember any
of the contents, but they're the right period and they cover various
planets.
Planet-themed series were popular, though. There was also Asimov's
"Lucky Starr" books, although I don't *think* any aliens blew up in
them -- they were more focussed on human conflicts.
Sounds like a mishmash of some of RAH's juveniles- There's decidely an
element or two of Space Cadet in the above.
