There's a vast gulf between "it hasn't been eradicated" and "no
progress has been made." Or even between "it hasn't been eradicated"
and "not much progress has been made," which is what you seem to have
modified your answer to.

I think it was Stirling, one of the times he was around here, who pointed
out that "he got cancer" and "he had a heart attack" and "he was in a car
accident" all had a "so of course he's dead" connotation in the 1950's or
1960's.

Not that I'm recommending it as a lifestyle. But in the past 15 years my
father has had four major cancers of which one (prostate) has recurred.
He's still alive and seeing his grandchildren.
