To a certain extent.
However, the One Ring has unusual behaviors properties aside from
people's reaction to it. Invisibility, indestructability, long-range
detectability, and some others.
Okay, sure, it's made of win, but the kind of win where you really
lose that's so common in these stories.
Arguably, despite being "people's
reaction to it", the corrupting effect might be listed, since it seems
to be more than can be accounted for by ordinary precious-ness,
Eh, fabulous treasures in stories, and not just silly horseshit with
dragons and elves, but real manly stuff where two guys come in the
door with guns, often turn everyone's heart small and hungry and
black. Treasure of the Sierra Madre, the aforementioned Maltese
Falcon, etc. At least in the pre-revisionist mode, where our heroes
were supposed to be able to transcend the venal drives of lesser
mortals or if not pay the cost. Compare the original Ocean's 11 with
the remake, or imagine J.R.R writing a story about soldiers who decide
to call in sick to the war that day and go rob a bank.
