I put in two spaces, simply because my fingers are trained to, and I
have to stay aware of it to avoid it (which means when I'm writing
letter columns destined for print, I have to do a search and replace
when I'm done to get rid of all the double-spaces), but one space, two
spaces, I don't much care and they look equally decent to me.
Why is it that a monospaced system, where the spaces are large, need
two of them, but a proportional system, where the spaces are quite
small, only takes one of them? It seems like you would need more of
the smaller spaces to mark the end of a sentence, rather than less of
them. I continue to prefer the look of two spaces after a period.
I was taught to type in the monospace era, and didn't get my first
font-based computer (my Amiga) until age 27. So I'd been using the
double space for more than a decade by then.
But I still don't see the logic in the change. "Spaces are smaller
now, so we need less of them to mark the end of the sentence."
