Then why are you posting to a group about written SF?
Because:

1. I hope someday to have the time to visit the library when I'm in
town.

2. I'm a wannabe novelist.

3. I've read a bunch of SF in the past.

Excellent. Say something about that.

Thanks for suggesting this. I'm about to go run out for the rest of the
day, but having finally decided to stick my feet in the deep end of the
pool (which is to say, Usenet), I've been wondering if there's a
tradition for introductory posts, or if they're frowned upon... in
general, trying to lurk a bit so I don't make a complete fool of myself.

So, thanks for reaching out to a newbie; the suggestion is appreciated,
even if I wasn't the one you were making it to in the first place.

Welcome! Dive right in please. In fact...hang on...okay, below is
something I wrote recently (to barf-bear in fact) - maybe it will help.
(and maybe it won't, esp if you've seen it already)

It's a pretty active group, with a lot of participants who have
a wide range of interests and backgrounds. It's generally rather
polite and fun-loving. B The FAQ for the group can be found at
http://www.steelypips.org/sfwrittenfaq/ The intro there seems
to be specifically helpful to new folks.

Whether you read the FAQ or not, it's worth emphasizing that
"SF" = "speculative fiction", including science fiction, fantasy,
where those two overlap each other (indeed, there are no universally
accepted definitions of either, and there are plenty of boundary
busters for any attempts) and where those two overlap a bit with
horror (although more lightly, and more like dark fantasy, since
horror has its own group(s)).

Like any group of people, we'll run off into tangents which are
not on-topic. These are generally acccepted/tolerated/ignored,
especially if the participants historically contribute on-topic
stuff.

So here's hoping you pull up a chair and stay a while and become
another contributing member of rasfw.
