In reading over the BSG thread, I found several references to and
mini- lists of what this or that poster thought good work, but
intermixed with a lot of other text. I post this in the hope of
seeing a focus that will make it easier to see just what shows
the folk here do think of as quality speculative-fiction drama
(or comedy).
Well, that tempts me to dig out the list I sent my Dad, after all
(stuff to look for on car boots and flea markets, so I can watch
them undubbed - he lives in the UK and likes going to them anyway).
I do not myself watch television much (excepting baseball), so
have no particular contributions of my own to offer, save perhaps
the original Doctor Who (I think one has to view the new and the
'classic" as two different things); on the new one, I watch
faithfully (via DVD), but the jury here is out.
I've seen a few episodes of the old series, and think it's cute. I
like the new one better, and it's at the very top.
I want also to add that I think it important to keep a clear
separation between what might be superficially entertaining--"a
great hoot", as Tegan once put it--as opposed to things one would
re- willingly watch without alcoholic inducement.
I've got that in the list (as indication for my Dad for how
important something is, if there ever is a choice).
So what are the all-time top 10 (or top whatever count you like)?
(And yes, I recall the word "written" in the group name.)
:)
[sorting through the original and then the various updated emails
that follow as I remember more...]
Ordered by category (I'll leave 'crime' and 'other' in it just for
comparison) and with a 1 to 5 rating next to them to indicate some
sort of priority ('0' means if he happens to come across it, fine,
but no need to search for it, '6' means I _really_ want this; both
burst the 5 star scale, at either end). It's a long list mainly so
there's lots of choice, not out of greed. (And thus, it also has
very old stuff on it - usually rated slightly lower because it's
been so long that it doesn't matter much.)
Top ones:
6 Doctor Who (Well, actually it should have an 8 to fit the rating)
6 Torchwood
6 Smallville (1 to 7) (I only like one character, mind.)
6 Babylon 5
6 Dexter
6 Red Dwarf (Because I remember and would really like to see more
of it.)
6 Dark Angel (second season, like one character again, story is
interesting, main character is annoying)
1 Dark Angel (first season)
6 Alien (I to IV)
Rest, ordered by category:
TV series (some exist as movies as well, but I mean the series):

----------------
5 Alien Nation
4 Flash Gordon (the new series)
3 Mutant X
3 Max Headroom
3 Quantumn Leap
2 First Wave
2 V
2 The Specialists (I think, it's a very old series about four
people with funny abilities)
2 Time Trax
2 Eureka
2 4400
1 7 Days
Vampires:
----------------
3 Moonlight
3 Blood Ties
2 Forever Knight (I think, some vampire series, pretty old by now)
2 Masquerade (I think, also a vampire series, also pretty old by now)
1 Angel
1 Buffy
Fantasy/Mystery:
----------------
5 Highlander (selected episodes, rest '2')
4 The Case John Doe
3 Dead Like Me
3 Dead Zone

4 Boston Legal
2 Samantha Who?
Movies:
--------------------------------
5 Labyrinth
5 Riddick
4 Mad Max (any)
4 Bat man (I like the way they made the real settings look like
cartoon, with primary colours and stuff, don't know which ones are
done that way, but I think at least two are)
3 the Mummy
2 Scream (any)
2 Scary Movie (any)
2 Lost Boys
2 From Dusk till Dawn
0 Monthy Python
