Another dumb science bit

I came across this when I recently read a short story from 2000. One
character is explaining to another how it was proven that diamonds were not
native to Earth and had to have come from space because testing had proven
that the carbon in them was about three and a half billion years old. Since
this was before life existed the carbon "obviously" couldn't have come from
Earth.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who's WTF? flag pops up at that.
