In article <gh0rd4$l6n$1@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>, jdnicoll@xxxxxxxxx says...
That would be Michael E. Brown of the California Institute of
Technology, discoverer of Eris, Sedna and Orcus and despite what
the IAU decided, Haumea as well and Michael D. Brown, failed politician,
failed Judges and Stewards Commissioner for the International Arabian
Horse Association and failed Undersecretary of Emergency Preparedness
and Response. Michael E. Brown has a blog and today's entry was this
one:

I am pretty sure that when I was 3 I could not name the
planets because I acquired speech unusually late and wasn't even
speaking by age three. What I cannot do is narrow down when I
did learn about the planets more exactly than about four for the
Moon (if we could the Moon as a planet for the purposes of this
discussion although I grant it's just a satellite) and earlier
than age 8 or 9 for Mars and Venus.
When did you folks learn about the planets as places and
not just lights in the sky?
About the same time when I learned them as lights in the sky, I reckon.
I've always lived in a city with plenty of light pollution, not very
conducive to stargazing. But I do remember times when I was about age 3-
4 staring out of the window into the night sky, and parents pointing out
Venus or Mars to me. And then I already knew they were planets, and that
Mars was supposed to be red. Indeed suggestible child as I was, I
convinced myself that I was actually seeing them as tiny disks, greenish
and red, respectively, although there's no way that could have been
possible. Later when I obtained a more coherent view of the night sky I
was actually very disappointed over this.
