My brother and I were brainstorming the other day about a sci-fi short
story we both read in a high-school text, about a guy who's
dissatisfied with life and goes to a travel agency to explore vacation
possibilities. He's shown a variety of options, but none seem to do
it for him. Then the agent shows him a brochure of particularly vivid
and nearly holographic photos of an otherworldly looking destination.
He's warned however, that it would be a one-way trip.
He's ultimately given a rendezvous point for the trip that proves to
be an old barn. When he enters the barn, there are others sitting on
wooden benches inside. After an interminable wait, thinking he's been
had, he storms outside -- just as an eerie glow erupts from the
structure. When he rushes back inside, everyone is gone. When he
goes back to the travel agency to try to "book" a new trip, they claim
not to know what he's talking about, and return money that he
supposedly left there by accident on his first visit.
Any ideas what this is called, or the author? Thanks!
In fact, it's "Of Missing Persons," by Jack Finney, available in the ABOUT TIME collection.
