The important clause there is "compared to its success in Europe"
right? Since we all know that many of the native cultures had argiculture.
The crops grown near here included maize (Mesoamerican in origin), squash
(also Mesoamerican) and beans (not sure).
I don't know if groups like the Iroquois planted sugar
bushes or only took advantage of them where they existed.
I am also not sure to what degree Diamond is aware of
the extent of sedentry agricultural societies in PreColumbian
New World,
