One more VERY important rule.

DO NOT TOP-POST!

I know some other forums promote this, but it's Very Very Very Bad Form
here.

Sorry to be such an idiot -- just trying to get it right...I'm not
sure I understand by "Top Post" I know you tried to describe it but
I'm still not sure what you mean. Did I correctly "not" top post just
now?

Yes, you correctly did.

Top-posting: you put all your new comments at the top of the message, leaving all the old stuff underneath it (so that if I want to understand what you're replying to, I have to go all the way to the bottom, then go back to the top to re-read what you said and understand it in context)

Bottom (or interspersed) posting: what you did in the prior post, and what I'm doing now: putting the new material AFTER what you're replying to, so it's seen in context.

Does it have something to do with using "Reply" verses "reply to
author"?

No. Reply to Author will (attempt to) send an E-mail message to the person who posted the article you're replying to. Since many of us spamtrap our email addresses, this will often cause you to send a message that actually never goes anywhere.
