It was just about the same for me. The only exception in high school was
the math books in my senior year. We had to buy them. But those were
soft-bound SMSG texts and not at all pricey.
We had to buy our CRC Handbook of Physics and Chemistry (and
the math one as well, I think) but the Rubber Handbooks are good value
for the money, at least in terms of kilograms of paper per dollar. I
still have mine and along with some other texts (mainly from UoArizona
Press) it has destroyed two bookshelves so far.
Oh, I'd forgotten about that! Eighth grade (I believe that Canada has
a similar system to the US), our math teacher said one day, "you can order
this book (holds up _CRC Math Tables_) for $2.00, because they have some
defective copies that don't have the gold leaf on the edge of the pages."
This was 1968 (+/-), so forty years of inflation in the greenback make it
what, about a ten-spot now? Hell of a deal, and yes, it is still on my
shelves. I never did pick up Physics and Chemistry, though.
