I think those kids were prepped.
It could be that the results were natural, and there is
a difference in the environment between Western schoolchildren
and Chinese or Vietnamese schoolchildren. Native language
is only one of the possible differences. Pitch could also be
the result of breathing polluted air or eating chicken feet.
A person's native language is the language they spoke
before they went to elementary school. Some people believe
there's a difference between native speakers and fluent speakers
of a language. No one can acquire a new native language.
It's almost impossible for a child in North America to acquire
a tonal language as a sole native language.
There are many prominent people north of the Rio Grande
for whom English is not a native language. Generally they
learned it in school and speak it like a native.
