I suspect Heinlein has a Woody Allen problem in that some of the attitudes
which are characteristic of his work have become dated very, very quickly.
If you listen, for example, tot he Woody Allen Standup Comic CD, it's
hilarious, but there are some jokes on there which just aren't funny
anymore. I mean, it's a concert CD, and you can hear the audience laughing
hysterically, but to the modern ear, nothing.
I have this problem with about half of the MTM Bob Newhart Show
episodes. I like Newhart, I like NEWHART but some of the default social
attitudes of the mid 1970s are like fingernails on a blackboard to me.
It's mostly how Emily's professional ambitions are casually dismissed
as insignificant [1] and vaguely amusing by Bob and his buddies that
annoys me. I also am a little puzzled that sometimes she seems worried
that her middle aged, balding nebbish husband might leave her when in
fact it would take her about one millionth of a second to find a guy
just as good and it probably would require the direct intervention
of God for Bob to replace Emily.
Bob was a succesful "doctor." I suspect he would have been able to partnet
up with someone. I doubt she would have been a significant upgrade from
Suzanne Pleschette.
Well, we do know Terri Garr works in the same building but her
character does not compare in my mind to Emily.
Emily was incomparable. In my, I guess, mind.

I have to note that his next sitcom had the single best final episode
in all of television history. And Emily was in it.

Voted the most unexpected moment in the history of television:

I had to go back and watch the tape to get the whole thing because I
literally fell off the couch laughing.

No shit, there I was...
I saw it when it aired. Some of the people in the studio audience started reacting as soon as the lights came on in the set, but I didn't start laughing my ass off until Suzanne sat up. I thought it looked vaguely familiar but I didn't place it.
