So, what is your favorite native of the Red Planet? And why?
At the very end of /The Martian Chronicles/, all the natives are dead,
the earth has been blown up real good, and the one remaining family
(of humans) on Mars is standing on a bridge over one of the canals and
someone mentions "the Martians". Another asks "Where?" and the reply
is "Look down." They see their own reflections.
Always gave me a shiver.
But compare the final moments of the episode "Blues for the Red
Planet" from Sagan's _Cosmos_. After giving his opinion that
Mars is for the Martians, even if they are microbes, he proceeds
to speculate that if there *aren't* any, then we can terraform
Mars to make it habitable, including digging ... canals.
"The Martians will be us."
