In fantasy thieves are common -- although usually as hero's sidekick,
not the hero. In SF... well, spies and secret agents are common also,
but genuine *thief* as a hero is rare. Note that even Stainless Steel
Rat ends up recruited as a secret agent. And in "Mother Hitton's
Littul Kittons" the thief is villain, not hero.
Hm. James Blish's novella `A Style In Treason' features an
extended scam being played by Earth's Traitor-In-Chief, although since
the plan goes wrong before the audience has been given a clear idea
what it is I'm not sure if it would satisfy what the original query
was looking for.
