The whole "Sharing Knife" set is deliberately contructed with
romance-novel trophes, so your girl-cooties meter may have pegged.
The Five Gods stuff slid downhill quickly (from quite a height; TCoC
is as well-written and compelling as any of the Miles books); Sharing
Knife was merely confirmation.
