(Mark Stephen) says...
is this sort
of selective breeding with humans actually impossible, or merely
unethical and kinda disgusting?
Unethical, certainly, since breeding for traits involves inbreeding and
rigid culling of anything that doesn't meet breed standards. However,
the Hawaiians bred a royal family of 7' tall geniuses that way. Ancient
Egyptians inbred their pharaohs, but we have no record of the traits
they were breeding for. There is evidence of human breeding programs in
several other ancient cultures.
The ancient breeding programs were all done without knowledge of modern
genetics. We could doubtless do a better job nowadays.
The breeding programs of dogs were done without the benefit of genetics. For that matter, we have chickens, cows, etc.
It is something humanity was aware of from a very early time.
