When I was a kid, I got most of my SF from magazines. Amazing,
Fantastic, Galaxy, Worlds of If, Analog and F&SF provided some
great stories, book reviews, editorials, a little fandom gossip,
and of course, Asimov's science columns. I got busy for a few
decades and had to slack off on my reading. Now I'm nearing
retirement, and the magazines seem to have disappeared. Are
there still any in publication? The old digest format seems to
have vanished from the news stand.
You might be interested in a couple of online magazines. Baen has
_Jim Baen's Universe_, a pro-quality online magazine, available, at
www.baens-universe.com. It's up to Volume II No. 5 currently, but
all the previous issues are available; it's bimonthly, Mike Resnick
claims responsibility for editing it, and you do pay for it--it's
downloadable, so you can read it on your e-reader of choice.
Another online magazine which seems to be continuing, is Helix at
www.helixsf.com. It's quarterly, has names I recognize on the
masthead (William Sanders and Lawrence Watt-Evans, for instance),
and is essentially begware (they give it to you free, and ask for
voluntary donations).
You misspelled "shareware".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareware
In _current_ usage, "shareware" means one of the following: "If you
don't pay, after a certain period the software will stop working." "If
you don't pay, after the trial period functionality will be reduced to
that of the free version." "If you don't pay, it won't start."
Not always. It includes that limited functionality but also includes
"freeware", software with no limit at all. However often online stories are
sold on the "first's one free" model. The first chapter, part of a trilogy
or even a stand-alone story is free and if you like it, then you to get
more, you're likely to buy more.
