You left out:

Soviets: In our world, this turns out not to be true.

ST: In our world, this IS true.

This is the ultimate difference.

In the real world, the Soviet approach was wrong.

In the ST world, the ST people are RIGHT. They CAN prove it mathematically.

Now, you can say "Well, I don't believe it! Despite no one showing any evidence otherwise, it annoys me in the real world so much that I will deny what the book itself implies about its own universe", but that's not a very useful argument.
