I understand how someone might not be able to read Vinge, although I'm a
huge fan.   And I understand how someone might love to read Cherryh,
although I can't finish her books.

And I can't finish her fantasy, at least none of it so far, although I
like her SF quite a lot. And this is despite the fact that I like
fantasy, in general, about as much as SF.

Wot, not even the (relatively short, dense) _Tree of Swords and Jewels_ ??

I do have trouble with her _Rusalka_ and _Fortress of X_ series..
