Who is "we"??? America is not the whole planet.
Right now, India and China are industrializing rapidly. Everybody in China wants to buy a car now. When everybody in India and China has reached the same standard of living that we have here in the U.S. now (probably another 25 years), total energy consumption will be *higher* than it is now, despite every conservation measure we can employ. You just can't elevate seven billion people to the same standard of living as the 300 million Americans today cost-free.
