Of course, in this case the Tolkien estate doesn't just want money -- part of the remedy they're seeking is for New Line to lose the rights to "The Hobbit."

Oh, I like that part. Now if only they could've gotten the rest
back before Jackson made his abomination.

I hate that part, because I love the LotR movie trilogy Jackson made and was looking forward to Jackson's take on The Hobbit.

And you'll probably see it. The reason rights reversion is listed in the lawsuit, almost certainly, is as a hammer to pressure New Line to settle the suit rather than go to court.

The threat, "Pay up, dammit, or lose a future billion dollars in revenue" is more effective than "Pay up, dammit, and lose some punitory damages that'll be dwarfed by your future profits on the franchise."

It's because they know New Line is desperate to make the HOBBIT movies that they're including it -- to goose New Line into settling and paying up before some courtroom even gets a chance to take the rights away.

But if New Line is making a habit of this, I suppose it's best they get slapped around.

I expect they'll get slapped around _and_ you'll see your Jackson-produced HOBBIT, probably directed by Sam Raimi or Guillermo del Toro or whoever it is they settle on.

And those of us who like it will like it, and Dorothy won't be forced at gunpoint to see it. Everybody wins.
