OK, having trawled through my memory, ravaged by decades of life in
America, I assert this with utter confidence: J. J. Pierce, in his
introduction to _The Best of Cordwainer Smith_ (at least the Del Rey paper
edition, which is wot I once had-- I just tracked it down on Amazon),
either himself took that responsibility (in which capacity I don't know)
or said Ackerman did . . . .

Okay, I just pulled that book off my shelves and checked, and first
off, there's no mention of Ackerman in there, and no explanation of
who came up with the titles.

And second, Pierce has a few facts flat-out wrong, such as the meaning
of "Acht" in German -- the "Vomacht" pun is much more complicated than
that -- so I wouldn't believe him even if he _had_ said it.

After consultation with my advisers-- OK, after talking to myself a bit--
I hereby release the following statement:

I stand by my assertion.

Well, okay, if you _want_ to look like a fool...

Please, on Usenet? Surely we've set the bar for looking foolish hgher
than *THAT*!! I, myself, once got into an argument with Pat O'Neill that
lasted over 5,000 posts.

Sure, but I'm gifted.

(5K _is_ impressive.)

It is usual on these occasions to make a great vapouring
about honour and conscience: but as those words are now
generally acknowledged to be utterly destitute of meaning,
I have too much respect for your understanding to say any
thing about them.
