I'm pretty sure it was by Asimov and was basically a retelling of the
Persian Wars with earth playing the part of Greece and the aliens
being the Persians. The aliens where called something like Diablos,
'cos the looked somewhat devil like.
I'm guessing it would have been first published in Astounding in the
40's or 50's as it seems the sort of thing J W Campbell would have
liked.
Perhaps ``Black Friar of the Flame'', which had as a key part
a space battle modelled on the Battle Of Salamis?
While Campbell was interested in early drafts of the story,
the thing ultimately more or less collapsed and got sent off to one
of the lesser magazines, and Asimov grew to hate it because he spent
more time rewriting this than he spent rewriting everything else he
ever wrote combined. (It's not so bad a story, actually, although
I'd like to have seen the earlier drafts.)
