Having just read the thread on his Crosstime Traffic series, I'm wondering
what books by him people do like?

The Case of the Toxic Spell Dump -- discworldish ATL fantasy
"Down in the Bottomlands" -- set in a world where the Mediterranean
never refilled
"Down in the Bottomlands" won Turtledove his only Hugo. (And it's a novella rather than a novel.)
GUNS OF THE SOUTH and RULED BRITANNIA are both good alternate histories, and THE CASE OF THE TOXIC SPELL DUMP is good, though filled with puns. IN THE PRESENCE OF MINE ENEMIES is another stand-alone AH, but not recommended. (The short story on which it was based was better.)
Also, just about any of his short fiction before he got stuck in a multi-volume series rut is pretty good.
