It was a small plot point somewhere in Gene Wolfe's Book of the
New Sun tetralogy -- Jonas, a former spaceman[*1] who traveled
with Sevarian for a while, had barely survived the crash when
his long-lost ship returned to Earth (sorry, Urth) and tried to
execute the mandatory endgame of its mission and land only to
discover that nobody'd been maintaining the ground-based
facilities that it needed for that maneuver. (Oops.)
*1: For some value of that word.
You've got to hand it to him, he certainly made a good fist of a sticky
situation.
