You know, you don't actually have to go all that far for "nature
doesn't care what you want" stories. I spent last night watching the
"Deadliest Catch" marathon, about Alaskan crab fishers, and there were
several examples of near-cold-equation behavior there.
Not a "good person must kill good person for good reason, OMG" story,
but the one that's always stuck in my mind is Jack London's "To Build
a Fire." About midpoint of the short story the greenhorn character
seals his fate (gets soaking wet in middle of snowy wilderness, no
shelter) but he doesn't realize he's dead for some time.
