It's a lot cheaper than broadband. And given that my modem is already
much faster than my reading speed, I see no point in paying more.

Honestly, you're missing out on most of it. *That*'s why you're having
such trouble figuring out the exact price of stuff.
(When I started online, my modem was not only slower than my reading
speed, it was slower than my *typing* speed -- even though I was a
much slower typist in those days.)
(I read the other day in the newspaper that 88% of dutch households
has acces to the internet and 75% has broadband).
That would imply that 13% use modems. So I would assume they are
still for sale. Unless you can think of anything else that's used
by 13% of the population but is not for sale (or available for free).
Laptops usually have one built-in. For the desktop, you can buy PCI cards
or USB dongles, but they mostly gather dust in shops.
