Brian Daley's Coramonde books are excellent for that.

Hambly's fantasies (the Darwath series (mainly the trilogy),
Dragonsbane, Darkmage).

David Coe's Winds of the Forelands (IIRC) is fun, so far.

Dare I mention _Quag Keep_? *ducks and runs for cover*
