It seems to me that some of what Aristotle did is clearly
early science. See, for example, his work on the sea-life
he observed around Lesbos. In any history of astronomy
Hipparchus is given a huge role, and I think it would be
hard to find a professional astronomer who did not regard
him as a real astronomer in every sense.

Hm. I may not know enough about the subject, then, to know where they -were-
doing useful empirical stuff, and only know the anecdotes about things like
"women, of course, have only 24 teeth".
